Spotlight: Clawdius

Out of all the crabs in Club Penguin, there are only three that actually have names – Klutzy, Klepto and Clawdius – but while Klutzy and Klepto both play major roles in certain mini-games (PSA Missions and Puffle Launch respectively) Clawdius doesn’t appear in any mini-games or even make any major appearances in Club Penguin as a whole.

The few times that this gnarled crab actually appeared in game (or outside of the game) were always mistakes, and for a long time we didn’t know what it’s purpose was – so let’s dive into the interesting history of this nearly-unused crab.

To start off with, Clawdius was only seen as a glitch on the spy phone. At some point in 2012, the Spy Phone messaging system was updated. Besides the new design of it, Clawdius was used as the new placeholder for the agent pictures in it. This meant that if the team forgot to include the code on what agent’s photo should appear, Clawdius (then known by the community simply as ‘the blue crab’) would pop up instead.

Of course, the only thing that this bug showed us was what the crab looked like, and that became a trend with it. Every time it appeared, it simply made a cameo appearance and no new information was given about it. Two times, after the spy phone was updated, Clawdia made cameo appearances – once in the login screen for Operation: Blackout (2012) and the other in the music video ‘Herbert Style’.

Despite these cameo appearances, nothing ever became of Clawdius. The crab was never properly implemented into Club Penguin or Club Penguin Island, but we did manage to acquire a bit more information on who the crab was and why he never properly made it into the game.

When Club Penguin Island was going into its last couple of weeks, the team started releasing blog posts revealing what their plans for the future had been before the game was shut down prematurely, and one of their posts was on Clawdius.

They revealed that when the team didn’t properly implement Clawdius into the original game (for reasons unknown), they decided to change the character and use it in Club Penguin Island instead. Clawdius quickly became Queen Clawdia, ruler of the crabs. Unfortunately, they ran out of time to implement that idea as well, so Clawdius (or Queen Clawdia) was never properly used in Club Penguin Island or Club Penguin – meaning he barely appeared in the Club Penguin Universe at all.

After reading that, we knew what Queen Clawdia’s purpose in Club Penguin Island was going to be, but we still didn’t know what Clawdius’ original purpose was. Luckily, in an exclusive interview with Lance Priebe, we managed to find out the remaining pieces of the story. Lance Priebe revealed that Clawdius was going to have a part in Operation: Blackout where he led a crab mob.

In fact, the secret blue crab that appeared at the Island Adventure Party of 2012 was going to have a key part in this mob, and they put it in the game to foreshadow what was going to happen.

Unfortunately, they decided to cancel the crab mob storyline as they thought it might distract players from their ultimate goal of stopping Herbert, so the crab mob was only occasionally eluded to during the party instead of having a major focus.

So Clawdius’ story ends on a sad note. The crab that could have played a very interesting role in Operation: Blackout was scrapped, and despite the team’s efforts to put him back in the game, he never quite made it. But even though Clawdius’ story never made it into the official Club Penguin, it could be implemented into Club Penguin Rewritten. Recently, the CPR Team posted this simple but direct photo to their social media pages:

It’s obviously hinting towards the upcoming EPF party, but could it mean something more? Although it’s not one of Clawdius’ claws, it’s definitely a crab one. Could Clawdius and his crab mob return to Club Penguin Rewritten? Only time will tell for sure, but in the meantime,
